And the winners are...

First of all, thanks and congrats to co-chairs Gene and Pat for organizing three exciting nights of great music! Paul's Tavern's back-room was packed, enthusiasm was high, the bands were psyched, the beer was cold, and the music howled.

The JSJBF listening committee chose two nights of semi-finalist contestants, and from those performances selected the finalist bands. Short 25-minute sets (less, because of set-up times) allowed the performers to max out, putting lots of focussed energy into their short times onstage. Now, I wouldn't want to be the judge of this thing, because all those performances were FINE. You could get a little hint of how things were going, tho, by counting the number of dancing feet.

After the competiton sets, at the end of the night, each night, there was an open jam hosted by the last band up. So cool to see the camaraderie between the bands and players, even after competing, to see them get up and play together.

Congratulations to all the contestants and our thanks for three nights of fantastic music & memorable good times. Best wishes to the winners, who are going on to the international IBC competition. Do us proud, folks!

Note from the webguy.

Went out to Paul's to catch the second night of semi-finals: what a fantastic night of music! But there was something more than music that night. Tradition? One of the scheduled bands dropped out, and Gene brought in the JSJBF Youth Project band, "Blue Mood", who played a hot abbreviated set which ended with a standing "O" from a very appreciative audience. The competition went on, with JonnyB and Matt O'Ree playing it out. And then, after the winners were announced, the BEST THING happened... Matt's Band backed up a Jam, and guests and principal players starting doing their thing... and the members of Blue Mood got up and jammed in. And there it was... what the JSJBF Foundation DOES! Educating and preserving the tradition. Teen-agers playing with the old guys. The bassist from Blue Mood sat in on the Hammond, O'Ree's keyboardist coaching him over his shoulder. The two gals from the youth band backing it up, even soloing. That awesome trumpet player, don't know his name, punctuating with short perfect bursts. Matt was fantastic: guiding the session, getting everyone involved, his back row holding it all together. You could feel some kind of spirit of the blues fill the room, like we had tapped into the vein of tradition, the soul of the blues and the music. Just a magic night.

And THAT, friends, is what JSJBF is about.
